Kirk Franklin Joins an Award-Winning Lineup at Carowinds for JoyFest 2009

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Feb. 5, 2009) –A powerful celebration of Gospel Music returns to Carowinds this year, featuring renowned artist Kirk Franklin, as JoyFest 2009 takes place on Saturday, May 23, at Carowinds’ Paladium Amphitheatre. The concert will also feature Marvin Sapp, Tye Tribbett, and Smokie Norful. Christian comedian Bone Hampton will serve as emcee for the event. JoyFest is the first in a series of music festivals scheduled at the park this season.


Kirk Franklin, an American Gospel music singer and author, is most notably known as the leader of urban contemporary gospel choirs such as The Family, God's Property and 1NC (One Nation Crew). Franklin, and his collaborations, has been the winner of 13 Dove Awards, five Grammy Awards, 15 Stellar Awards, and two BET Awards. Most recently, Franklin was named the 2007 Best Gospel Artist by BET. His tenth album, The Fight of My Life, was released in December 2007.

Preacher, singer and evangelist, Marvin Sapp has created albums as a solo artist and with the gospel group Commissioned, formed by Fred Hammond. Sapp combines spoken word ministry and musical entertainment during live shows, giving him a unique style. Sapp is a Dove Award and Stellar award nominee. His seventh solo album, Thirsty, was released in 2007.

Tye Tribbett is the founder of the gospel group Tye Tribbett & Greater Anointing, known for providing high energy praise and worship. The group’s most recent album, Victory Live!, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album. Stand Out, due for release May 6, will be the group’s third album overall and second straight live-recording album.

Rev. W.R. "Smokie" Norful, Jr. is an American gospel singer and pianist, best known for his 2002 album, I Need You Now, and his 2004 release, Nothing Without You, which won a Grammy at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album in 2004.

Carowinds is a 112-acre amusement and water park featuring more than 50 great rides, attractions, and shows. New in 2009--Carolina Cobra, the 125-foot tall towering twisting serpent, will send guests speeding through three inversions forwards and then again backwards!
